Thailand Accomodation
Bangkok- Bed Station Khao San Road
Definitely one of the nicer hostels we stayed in over the six weeks. This location isn't too far from the airport and was easy to get taxis or tuk tuks to/from. The hotel isn't actually on Khao San Road (which was a positive for noise / amount of people) but two blocks away- super easy to get to to grab dinner from a street vendor or a drink. There are mixed, female and male dorms. The room we were in had 8 bunks and a shared bathroom with a toilet & shower. The beds had small lockers in them along with curtains (a major perk) that you could close around you bed. The big lockers were big enough for both of my backpacks. The pool was the perfect place to cool off after a day of exploring Bangkok, with a restaurant and bar right next t it. There is a really nice common area as well with TVs and bean bags. We had an 8 hour layover in Bangkok and we went back to Bed Station to chill out for the day and use the pool and showers.
Chiang Mai- Glur
10/10 would not recommend to a friend. We got to Glur late after a flight from Bangkok. Told that the pool wouldn't be open during the stay- which it didn't say on the website when booking but we got an email about it after we booked. We had 5/6 beds in a room. Everything definitely needed to be ckeaned- smooshed, dead bugs on the way and a whole lotta dust. Which we probs could've dealt with until the bed bugs showed up. There were definitely bed bugs on one of the beds...so I'm sure they could've been anywhere. After saying it to be front desk they offered another room which looked no better so we panic searched at 1am for a new place. The staff refunded us immediately and we left in an itchy panic
Chiang Mai- Mona Chiang Mai- Boutique Hotel
So props for taking us in at 1 in the morning in a panic- but in a weird way. The front door of the hotel was open so we went on in and stood in the little reception area. It was obvious no one was coming to show us to the room. A quick call led to a scavenger hunt around the room for our key. We were greeted by a gecko and a whole lotta ants but there wasn't bed bugs so it would do. The room wasn't great but we really just needed somewhere to leave our bags and sleep more than somewhere nice to hangout. The location was probably the biggest down side- out of the way from the city and down a little lane that wasnt the easiest for taxi drivers to find.
Pai- Purple Monkey Backpackers
Super cool, super chill- but definitely the most bugs we encountered...anywhere. There are dorm style rooms or A-frames (which we stayed in). The a-frames are just mattresses on the floor, a mosquito net and a stand up fan. The shared bathrooms were in the middle of the a-frames and had two shower rooms & two toilets & sinks. There's a restaurant and bar with good prices and events like beer pong or a bar crawl for most nights. The hostel is in a great location to the main streets and the staff was helpful with getting us taxis.
Koh Samui- Cosi Hotel
Cosi was a really nice hotel. Standard hotel rooms with the added bonus of breakfast vouchers for every morning of the stay to spend at their breakfast counter. There's a rooftop infinity pool and the hotel is a five minute walk from the beach. Cosi is on the grounds of a big outdoor shopping mall and is a close walk to plenty of bars and restaurants. There is a travel agent in the hotel who was super helpful when it came to booking day trips and our ferry to Pha Ngan.
Koh Pha Ngan- Magic Wave Hostel
It's only a 10 minute drive from the pier and a 15 minute drive to Haadrin Beach for the full moon party...if it wasn't for the location there really wouldn't be much else for it to offer. The main Street has a 711 and some small restaurants/cafes. The road back to the hostel is a dirt road and not very well lit at night. The hostel itself isn't really well maintained. They were only opening in the low season for the full moon party and you could tell. We stayed in a family room which was a double bed, and two sets of bunk beds. There is a pool and a bar- the pool needed a facelift but was fine for cooling off in. We left early to catch the first ferry off the island and were met by the owner and another guest having some kind of drunken, heated conversation at the bar.
Krabi- Kokotel Ao Nang Beach
Definitely a great location to the beach and bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is pretty standard- the rooms were clean and had a mini fridge and there were water coolers in h hallway. The rooftop pool was fairly small and there weren't a lot of seating options. The breakfast buffet that was included in the price of the room was a big selection with Western and Thai food choices.
Phi Phi Islands- Coco Bella Resort
The resort has standard hotel rooms or bungalows. The front desk staff were anything but welcoming and friendly. There is someone at the pier who will meet you and carry your bags for you in a cart (no cars on the island) up to the resort There is a small restaurant by the pool that has the breakfast buffet in the morning and is open for lunch and dinner. The resort is right up from the beach bars and around the corner from the main square with bars and restaurants.
Phuket- Bearpackers Patong Beach
Dorm style hostel with shared bathrooms on every floor. There are options for different sized dorm rooms, mixed or female only or private rooms. The dorms have lockers big enough for bckpacks and the beds all had a small shelf with a light and outlets. Bearpackers has a no-shoe policy so there are a bunch of shoe racks right before the door to leave your shoes at. There is a pretty spacious common area with a TV that leads out to the rooftop pool. The pool is small but has a perfect view of the beach. There is a travel agent at the front desk who we booked one of our day trips through- and there are travel agent booths along the street that made it easy to compare prices. The hostel is around the corner from Bangla road and the Discovery shopping center which means for plenty of entertainment and food options.
